Mount Everest

The height of Everest was stated to be 29002 feet (8840 meters) in a survey conducted by British India in 1856. It was also named Peak-15. The British surveyor Andrew Waugh offered to name the peak Everest after Sir George Everest. For centuries Tibetans used the Chomolungma mountain peak but it was not possible to keep a local name for Waugh.

This mountain peak has always been a centre of attraction for climbers. Whether experienced climbers or novices, everyone wants to come here. Here it is very difficult to reach K-2 i.e. Nanga Parbat. Natural hazards, altitude weakness, weather and wind make it difficult to climb here.

The British campaign began in 1953 under the leadership of John Hunt. He sent a team of two mountaineers, Tom Burdillon and Charles Evans, to climb Mount Everest first, but they both reached 300 feet high on May 26, 1953, as they were exhausted because of a lack of oxygen.

Two days later another team was drafted. The team consisted of Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. He reached a peak on 29 May 1953 at 11.30 am. Hillary first stepped on the summit. They took photos there and fed each other sweets.
